Note about pollination
We have been asked many times about pollination when using Growover and the answer is not simple!
Plants vary in their method of pollination and for more information about this you may find the Harvest to table web site interesting.
Vegetables grown for their fruit can be self pollinators (tomatoes, beans, peas, peppers) or cross pollinators (cucumbers, eggplant, pumpkin). The latter need insects for pollination. So you need to lift the fabric during flowering and then replace it. Wind pollinated vegetable for be left covered, as air passes easily through the fabric.
Vegetables grown for their leaves, roots or tubers can stay covered apart from weeding and harvesting, so careful planning of veggie beds helps. If you want to save viable seed from your leaf and root vegetables then lifting the Growcover when these are flowering too may help. Pollination may be assisted by wind or various small insects as well as birds and bees so just experiment to see what works in your own garden. |
